Learning about Air Pollution and Air Quality

Summary

This resource was produced as part of a collaboration between the University of Reading research academics and primary and secondary education practitioners.

A lovely introduction about the CALM (Clean Air Living Matters) project will give you an overview of the research and how your school can get involved. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDU1E5roXCA

How to use the lesson plan

This lesson plan is for a scheme of work lasting 2 weeks or 2 lessons (with a period of 2 weeks in between to gather data).

Key topics to be covered and knowledge achieved by the end of the session are outlined.

The ‘Further Reading and references’ section provides references to academic research from Marta O’Brien and other sources collected by Sam Kiely. You can use this to develop your own knowledge or your teaching materials.

These lessons focus on indoor air quality but could be easily adapted to record outdoor air quality; however, this would require a different monitor to record pollutants in outdoor settings.

The measuring equipment can be requested through Reading Borough Council’s website https://www.reading.gov.uk/climate-and-pollution/clean-air-living-matters-exploring-reading-with-schools/

Evaluation

For teachers

We are keen to evaluate and monitor the effectiveness of these resources as they are used by teachers in schools. You can scan the QR code on the final page of this resource which will take you to a short post-survey (‘Lesson Plan Effectiveness Evaluation’).

We encourage you to be as open and honest as possible as this will enable us to better develop the materials. All data will be anonymised prior to analysis.

If you do not feel comfortable answering the survey, or prefer to give feedback in a different way, please contact Stéphanie Mitchell, (s.mitchell@reading.ac.uk).
